Rotary Coimbatore Gaalaxy, in collaboration with the Kousika NeerKarangal Team and with the support of NSS students of Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, jointly planted 6,000 palmyra seeds at the Kousika River basin in Naranapuram village, Vadugupalayam, Arasur on Saturday.
The initiative, carried out as Phase IV of the project, aims to prevent soil erosion during the overflow of water in the Kousika River basin.
A total of 200 NSS students, led by NSS Programme Coordinator Radha and the faculty members, took part in the initiative.
Rtn. Kannappan Narayanan, President of the club; Rtn. Nandini Selvaraj, Secretary; Rtn. Balasubramanian, Project Chairman; Rtn. Palaniappan; Rtn. Arunachalam; Rtn. Mukhil Vannan; Rtn. Vasanth; and Rtn. Suresh were present.
As part of Phase I, 100 palmyra seeds were planted, followed by 6,000 seeds in Phase II and 3,000 seeds in Phase III. With the addition of 6,000 seeds in Phase IV, a total of 15,100 palmyra seeds have been planted across all four phases.
The initiative has been carried out across important traditional water bodies within the Kousika River basin, including Kalli Kulam, Avaram Kulam, Sarkarsamakulam (SS Kulam), and Kalingarayan Kulam (Kondayampalayam Kulam).
