Kovai Medical Centre & Hospital (KMCH), organised an Organ Donors Felicitation Program recently on the theme Life After Life. Held to recognize the invaluable contribution of organ donors and their families, the event also aimed to create greater public awareness about the importance of organ donation.
Arunraj, TN Minister for Health took part in the program as the Chief Guest and also unveiled the Donors Wall of Honour at the hospital’s premises in the presence of Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman and Managing Director and Dr. Arun N. Palaniswami, Executive Director, KMCH.
The Donors Wall of Honour serves as a lasting tribute to individuals whose selfless decision to donate organs has given a new lease of life to many patients. It will be a permanent memorial for the deceased donors. KMCH also honoured the family members of the organ donors at the occasion.
Dr. Arun N Palaniswami, Executive Director, KMCH in his keynote address expressed that to choose to give life to another during the time of profound sorrow is one of the most selfless acts humanly possible.
“Through the gift of organ donation, the donors and their family members have turned unimaginable grief into a legacy of hope, healing, and life for individuals and families who were praying for a second chance,” he said.
Speaking to the press and media post the event, Minister Arunraj said that Tamil Nadu is the State to do highest number of organ transplant surgeries in India. However, we are still far away from fulfilling the required number of such transplant procedures in demand.
“For kidney transplant surgeries, hospitals are currently fulfilling only about 7% of the total demand. The gap is even more severe for liver, heart, and lung transplants, where less than 2% of the total required procedures are actually being carried out. Hence we need to create awareness about organ donation among the public,” the Minister emphasized.
