G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNMH) and The Hans Foundation (a public charitable trust) together successfully performed bone cancer surgery on a 13-year-old girl from Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, recently.
The girl received life-saving treatment for Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, with the
support of the trust and a dedicated team of medical professionals.
The girl, eldest of two children in her family, began experiencing severe pain and swelling in her
right leg three months ago. Initially, she was treated with painkillers and ointments by a local physician, but the lack of improvement led her parents to seek further medical attention at a private hospital.
An X-ray revealed concerning signs, prompting a referral to GKNMH for further evaluation.
Following extensive diagnostic tests, the girl was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the Right Tibia, a form of bone cancer. The diagnosis was a devastating blow to her family, who were already struggling financially. Her father, a farmer with an income of approximately Rs 6,000 per month, faced difficulty in affording the necessary treatment.
The girl’s treatment plan involved a multidisciplinary approach, including consultations with an
orthopedic surgeon and a radiation oncologist. She underwent three rounds of chemotherapy followed by a complex six-hour surgery, performed by Dr. Arul Raj, Chief of Department of Onco- Surgery, along with Dr. Mansoor Ali, Orthopedic Surgeon, and Dr. Anand Narayan, Radiation
Oncologist.
The surgery involved hybrid treatment to avoid the use of an external prosthesis, which significantly reduced the overall cost. The affected bone was subjected to high doses of radiation therapy to eliminate cancer cells before being reattached to its original position.
The post-surgery recovery period for the girl was stable, and she has since been discharged in good health.
The team at the Hospital extends their gratitude to The Hans Foundation for their timely and generous support, recognizing the urgent need for financial assistance.
The total cost of the surgery was approximately Rs 4,00,000, fully covered by the trust.
